Another Great Missourian Dead

Rev. John D. Vincil, Mason, Educator, Minister, and Philanthropist died at his home in St. Louis last Thursday afternoon. Dr. Vincil was grand secretary of the Grand lodge of Missouri Masons, president of the Board of Curators of the University of Missouri, secretary of the Methodist conference, president of the Methodist orphans' home and was in various ways connected with many other charitable and benevolent institutions. His career was a demonstration of what pluck and industry can do under adverse circumstances. An orphan at ten he made himself. At fourteen he joined the Methodist church and soon after undertook the work of preparing for the ministry. His career as such began in 1857 when he was elected grand secretary of the Masonic lodge and even then he retained his connection with the conference and each year attended its meetings and served as its secretary. The esteem in which he was held by Missouri Masons was evidenced three weeks ago when he was re-elected for the twenty-seventh time the grand secretary of Missouri by acclamation, this being the first time any man has been thus honored. Dr. Vincil began lowly but he goes to rest numbered with Missouri's great and good a fit end of a useful life.
