Quirin Urbain was born on March 13, 1830 in Aux Mines, County St. Marie, France. He was the son of Quirin Urbain and Marie Genevieve Hinsinger. At the age of twenty-two years, he came to America with a cousin. They landed in the United States on March 1, 1853. He was Naturalized as an American citizen on July 12, 1859. After arriving in the United States, Quirin made his way to Bankston, Iowa where he settled.

It was at Bankston that he married Mary Kirby on July 17, 1856. Quirin and Mary had thirteen children - Mary, Anna, Joseph Michael, Edward, Margaret, Katherine, Maurice, James L., Michael Charles, Elizabeth M., and three babies who died in infancy.

The family moved to the Placid area in Dubuque County before 1870. Quirin worked as a wagon maker, carpenter and farmer. Quirin died of an abscess on March 19, 1908 near Placid, Iowa.
