Mary Kirby was born on Janury 14, 1839 in County Cork, Ireland. She was the daughter of Edward Kirby and Anne Dunn. She came to the United States with her father, sister and brother. Her mother died in Ireland. They arrived in America, coming through New Orleans, in about 1843. They came to the Bankston, Iowa area.

Mary married Quirin Urbain on July 17, 1856 at Bankston, Iowa. They were the parents of thirteen children - Mary, Anna, Joseph Michael, Edward, Margaret, Katherine, Maurice, James L., Michael Charles, Elizabeth M., and three babies who died in infancy. Mary and Quirin moved to near Placid, Iowa before 1870.

Mary served as a makeshift doctor in her community. She did such things as delivering babies and caring for the sick. Mary was known for the chickens and turkeys that she raised. She was also known to smoke a pipe that she kept in her pocket. Mary was also outspoken and not afraid to show her Irish temper.

Mary died near Placid at the home of her daughter, Mary McDermott on September 12, 1927.
