James Wilbur Collins was born James Wilbur Hood, to parents, Andrew Henry Hood (1883 - 1918) & Lilly Collins Hood (1894 - 1918). Both his parents died during the Spanish Flu epidemic in 1918. He was raised by his Collins side of the family, and decided to take 'Collins' as his last name. His sister, Beatrice, chose to keep her last name as 'Hood', until she married, of course. ~terry

                  James Wilbur Collins

James Wilbur Collins, 79, of Crab Orchard, Raleigh County, formerly of Charleston, died Tuesday in Beckley VA Hospital after a long illness.

He was a 10-year resident of Crab Orchard and was a former resident of Falls Church, Va. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II and received the Bronze Star.

Surviving: wife, Iline Blevins Collins; sons, Howard Ray of Falls Church, James Lowell at home; daughter, Sandra Kay Meador of Mechanicsville, Md.; four grandchildren.

Service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Melton Mortuary, Beckley, with the Rev. Ed Garten officiating. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Prosperity. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
