Physician, Naturalist, and Probate Judge. He published six papers on land and freshwater mollusks. Kirtland's water snake (regina kirtlandii) is named in his honor. In addition to his many achievements, he developed over 30 varieties of sweet cherry trees while he lived in Cleveland, some of which are still available from nurseries
