Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, he entered the US Army as 2nd Lieutenant in the Pennsylvania Volunteers and served in the Mexican War. At the start of the Civil War, he was clerk of the courts for Alleghany County when commissioned a Major in the 13th Pennsylvania Volunteers. Promoted Colonel of the 102nd Pennsylvania Volunteers, he distinguished himself at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, was promoted Brigadier General in November, 1862 and resigned his commission in December, 1864. After the war, he was United States Marshal for the western district of Pennsylvania.
