87, 5028 Ivy Bridge Drive, Lexington formerly of Raleigh, North Carolina, former head of the Department of Statistics at the University of Kentucky and Vice President at Clintrials Research Inc. and Statistical Consultants of Lexington, died Sunday January 19, 2003 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. Dr. Anderson was born on April 20, 1915 in North Liberty, Indiana son of the late George William and Mabel Schrader Anderson. He graduated from DePauw University in 1936 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics and from Iowa State College in 1941 with a Ph.D. degree in mathematics. In 1941, he was recruited by Gertrude M. Cox to the Department of Statistics at North Carolina State University where he stayed until 1967. At that time he became the first chair of the Department of Statistics at the University of Kentucky, a position he held from 1967 to 1980. He was Assistant to the Dean for Statistical Services at the College of Agriculture from 1980 until 1985. While a professor at the University of Kentucky, he consulted with a number of drug companies on clinical trials and with several computer programming companies including IMSL, BMDP, and SAS. In 1978, he and two colleagues in the Department of Statistics formed a private consulting company, Statistical Consultants of Lexington. The company eventually merged with Clintrials, Inc. where he was Vice President until he retired in 1998. During his distinguished career, he received considerable professional recognition. He was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Statistical Association [ASA], and the Institute for Mathematical Statistics, and a member of the International Statistical Institute and the Boimetric Society. He served as President of the American Statistical Association in 1982 and was a member of the ASA'S Census Advisory Committee for six years. He co-authored a well-known book, Statistical Theory in Research, and numerous papers in statistics, and he was invited to consult on statistical matters in many countries including India, Egypt, Japan, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary Turner Anderson of Garner, North Carolina, two children, William Bayard Anderson and his wife Barbara, Louisville, Kathryn Anderson, of Nashville, Tennessee: three grandchildren Jim Anderson, Kate Anderson both of Louisville and Eric Rowland, Nashville, three brothers,Virgil Anderson and his wife Avis, Georgetown, Texas, Paul Anderson and his wife Marylee, Walkerton, Indiana and Fred Anderson and his wife Peggy, Florence, South Carolina and three sisters, Lois Anderson, Carolyn Anderson both of Valparaiso, Indiana and Bernice Krieve, Los Angeles, California, sister-in-law Dolores Anderson, Laporte, Indiana, a special friend Gordon Cummins, Lexington, several nieces and nephews and many close friends and family. Funeral services will be 2 P.M.Thursday, January 23 ,2003 at Walnut Hill Church conducted by Rev. Michael L. Ward and Rev. David Sharrard with burial in Walnut Hill Cemetery. Casketbearers will be Allen Garner, John Murphy, Royce Taylor, Eric Rowland, Jim Anderson, Fred Anderson, Bob Narrow and Patrick Bean. Honorary casketbearers will be the Longreen Investment Club, James Tucker, John McIntosh, George Schwert, Tom Moore, Ed Czerwinski, Larry Nelson, Tip Richmond and Kelly Buckley. Friends may call 4-8 P.M. Wednesday [today], January 22, 2003 at the W. R. Milward Mortuary- Southland. Contributions may be made to Walnut Hill Church 575 Walnut Hill Road, Lexington, Kentucky 40515 or to the Richard L.
