John was a prominent Richmond businessman, and father of famed spymaster Elizabeth Van Lew. He married Eliza Baker in Henrico County on 10 January 1818. They had at least three children: Elizabeth, John Newton, and Anna Paulina. Anna married Joseph Klapp in Richmond on 12 January 1844.

He died of "Dyspepsia," per Cemetery records, and is buried near much of his family in the Orrin Williams plot.
