SCIOTO CO AIRMAN IS PRESUMED DEAD: CPL. MCCLAY UNHEARD FROM AFTER B-24 MISSION
Missing in action since April 20, 1945, while on a mission over Indo-China, Cpl. Newell McClay Jr., 23, of Lucasville, was presumed dead Tuesday by the war department.

He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Newell McClay of Lucasville and leaves a wife, Mrs. Juanita R. McClay of Columbus. He also leaves a brother, Ellis McClay of Lucasville and a sister, Mrs. Donald Edwards of Columbus.

Cpl. McClay was an engineer-gunner aboard a B-24 bomber and was in service about two years.

He was employed here by Drummond Implement Co. and later worked at Troy.

Based in the Philippines, "Patches" was shot down over Indochina. O'Brien was captured, possibly at sea, tortured and killed by the Japanese. The ship was lost on the way to the target for a bombing mission against Saigon. Last known position was over South China Sea with last reported position at 10deg 15min N lat and 110deg 15min E long. The entire crew was officially declared dead the day of the mission. Presumed dead by War Department in March 1946. The entire crew (except O'Brien) are memorialized on the tablets of the missing at the Manila American Cemetery.
