Known as Jack, Lt. Lundberg served as a Second Lieutenant and Navigator in the 534th Bomb Squadron, 381st Bombardment Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He was a navigator in the John Houston crew. Prior to his service overseas, Lt. Lundberg instructed navigation at Hondo Army Airfield in Hondo, Texas.
On Lt. Lundberg’s first mission as lead navigator, 22 June 1944, Lt. Lundberg flew for the first time with the Sam Peak crew on the B-17 #4297084 “Spare Charlie”, which took off from Ridgewell Air Field, Essex, England, on a bombing mission over Abbeville, France. “Spare Charlie” was shot in the #2 and #3 engines right after its bombs were dropped and crashed in Les Marais d’Épagnette (The Marsh of Épagnette).
Jack was “Killed In Action” in this crash. On 15 February 1945, Lt. Lundberg’s body was found by French citizens near the Somme river on the opposite side of Les Marais d’Épagnette (The Marsh of Épagnette). Later that day, he was buried in the British Military Section in the Abbeville Communal Cemetery. On 12 April 1949, Lt. Lundberg was permanently buried in the Normandy American Cemetery.
He was awarded the Purple Heart and an Air Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster.
