Wayne served as a Sergeant & Ball Turret Gunner on B-17 "Miss Mary Kay" (#43-38131), 848th Bomber Squadron, 490th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Mendocino County, California prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on August 24, 1943 in San Francisco, California. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

Wayne was "Killed In Action" when his B-17 was shot down by German Flak boats in the harbor of Middelharnis, Netherlands during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
