William served as a Staff Sergeant and Ball Gunner on B-17 "Stormy Weather" (#42-5225), 323rd Bomber Squadron, 91st Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Nassau County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on August 13, 1942 at Fort Jay, Governor's Island, New York. He was noted as being employed as a Machinist and also as Single, without dependents.

William was "Killed In Action", along with his entire crew, when his plane was shot down while on a mission to Schweinfurt, Germany to bomb a Ball Bearing Plant. He was awarded the Air Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.

The 91st Bomber Group lost 11 B-17's on this mission.
