Hit by flak while straffing locomotives near Stuttgart, Germany on February 20, 1945. Lt Brendle, a member of the 78th Fighter Group, was killed on his ninth combat mission.

He went overseas in February, 1944, going to Iceland where he was a member of the 33rd Fighter Squadron on patrol duty. He was sent to the European theater in December, 1944. He enlisted in the army air corps in October, 1943, receiving his silver pilot's wings and commission in October, 1943, at Napier Field, Alabama.
