Thurston served as a Captain & Pilot on B-24H #42-52447, 703rd Bomber Squadron, 445th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Brazos County, Texas prior to the war.

B-24H #42-52447, while on a bombing mission over Dessau, Germany, was struck from above by B-24H #42-51098 which tore off one of their wings.

B-24H #42-51098, which had been hit by German flak, was uncontrollable which caused the collision. Both B-24's ended up crashing in Germany during the war. Some parachutes were seen.

Thurston was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Air Medal and a Purple Heart.
