Clarence served as a Second Lieutenant & Co-Pilot on B-29 #42-63430, 873rd Bomber Squadron, 498th Bomber Group, Very Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Clinch County, Georgia prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on April 9, 1942 at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, Georgia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a farmer and also as Single, with dependents.

He was married sometime after his enlistment.

B-29 #42-63430 took off, with a crew of 11, from Isley Field #1, Saipan on a bombing mission over Negoya, Japan. After a successful bombing mission, via radio, they reported that they were attacked by enemy aircraft which shot out one of their engines and wounded two crew members. They also reported that they were ditching in the sea near Dolly's Folly. The entire crew was lost in this ditching.

Clarence was declared "Missing In Action" in this ditching.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
