After take off they were never seen again and believed to have crashed into the sea for an unknown reason during the war. The entire crew of " 11 " were lost in this crash. Only the remains of S/Sgt William E. Heller were later found in the sea.
Charles was declared "Missing In Action" in this loss during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal with "1" Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
