Elbert served as a Captain and Pilot on B-29 #42-24181, 874th Bomber Squadron, 498th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during WW II. Based on the MACR this B-29 did not have a nickname.
He resided in Cuyahoga County, Ohio prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on February 10, 1941, prior to the war, at Fort Hayes, Columbus, Ohio. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Architect and also as Single, without dependents.
B-29 #42-24181 took off, with a crew of 11 as a part of Mission #10, from Isley Field, Saipan on a bombing mission over Tokyo, Japan during the war.
After a successful mission and while returning to base they reported via the radio that they were having trouble. One engine completely stopped and another engine was being feathered. They decided to ditch the B-29 into the sea. The entire crew was lost in this ditching.
Elbert was declared "Missing In Action" in this ditching during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
