Daughter of James Brown and Mary Mead [née Eaton] Brown, was born in County Antrim, Ireland in 1771. Soon after her family emigrated to South Carolina aboard the ship "Lord Dunluce" that left Larne on October 4 and arrived in Charleston on December 20, 1772. They were part of Rev. William Martin's Reform Presbyterian, who where seeking religious freedom and given land in the back country of South Carolina to start communities and help expand the Colony of the Carolinas.

Around 1790, Mary married John McDill; with whom she had the following known children:

Jane "Jennie" (1802-1875)
James (1806-1883)
Nancy Agnes (1806-1881)
