VANCOUVER - Walter "Walt" Edward Backus Jr., 74, died May 26, 2010, in Vancouver. He was born Oct. 5, 1935, in North Platt, Neb., the son of Walter Edward Backus Sr. and Julia Ellen (Griffith) Backus.
He and Shirley Ann Dalton met when they were barely teenagers, and married on Aug. 9 1952, in Vancouver. They initially made their home in Vancouver, where he worked for ALCOA for 20 years. During the time he was employed at ALCOA, he opened Walt's Cabinet Shop in the Vancouver area. After he retired from ALCOA, the couple moved to the Long Beach Peninsula in 1977, where he owned and operated Walt's Cabinet Shop for 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of Vancouver; his children, daughter and son-in-law, Julie (Backus) and Jimmy Hubbard of LaCenter, and daughter, Jennie (Mit) Backus of Republic; granddaughters, Chasitty (Dees) McCabe of Yacolt, Charitty (Dees) Harvey of Minot, ND, Kalisha (McNally) Burton of Ocean Park, Garnita Backus of St. John and Lacie (Bolden) DeWitt of Long Beach; grandsons, Billy Backus and Kasey Butler of Vancouver; James "Cole" Hubbard of Battleground, Christopher Renzi-Backus of Republic, John Frueler of Davis, Calif., and Tyson Backus; as well as 13 great-grandchildren. His parents, and three of his children, Jodie (Backus) Bolden, Jeanie "Pooh" (Backus) Butler and James "Jim" Backus preceded him in death.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m., on June 4 at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 1101 N.E. 112th Avenue in Vancouver, with a potluck reception to follow.
