Shirley A. (Dalton) Backus, 83, died May 23, 2017, in Coos Bay, Oregon. She was born on April 19, 1934 in Rexton, Michigan, to Vinton and Nettie (Loper) Dalton. The Dalton's moved to Vancouver, Washington when Shirley was young, she attended Minnehaha and Fort Vancouver High Schools.
Shirley met her childhood sweetheart, Walter Backus, when they were barely teenagers and they were married August 9, 1952. They lived in Vancouver, Washington for 25 years where they raised their five children, and started Walt's Cabinet Shop.
In 1977 they moved to the Long Beach Peninsula in Washington, where Shirley loved spending time with her family. She often volunteered in the local community, specifically at the Ocean Park Fire Hall Halloween Haunted House, Reach Out Ministries Thrift Store, Girl Scouts of America and many years at her grandchildren's schools.
Shirley enjoyed traveling, decorating for holidays, celebrating special occasions, and collecting Lighthouse decor.
She is survived by her daughters, Julie (Backus) Hubbard and Jennie "Mit" (Backus) Renzi; siblings, Archie Dalton, Catherine "Kay" (Dalton) Beirley, Arbutus (Dalton) Dunn, George Dalton, Fred Dalton, Steve Dalton, John Dalton, Donald "Wil" Dalton; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A graveside memorial service was held on June 10, 2017 at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 1101 N.E. 112th Ave. in Vancouver, Washington with a reception following.
