Joseph Jr. served the CSA as a private in the 2nd Battalion, Virginia Infantry, also known as Waller's/Quartermaster Battalion, Local Defense, Company F. The 2nd Battalion combined in September 1864 with the 6th Infantry Battalion to become the 2nd Regiment, Virginia Infantry, Local Defense, where he was a member of Company H. Little brother, Henry Clay Dabney was in both units with Joseph Jr., and they worked in the CS Boot Depot in Richmond as shoemakers at a rate of $2 per day, in addition to traditional military duties. In December 1864, Joseph Jr. was hospitalized for four weeks with pneumonia.
According to family lore, Joseph and Henry brought comrade James Henry Noland home with them after the war. Soon after, he married their little sister, Tomasia.
Living the rest of his life with his family in Chilesburg, Virginia, his profession is alternately listed as shoemaker or farmer. Joseph Jr. applied for a pension on 28 Jul 1902 at the age of 73. Maria passed away shortly thereafter in 1903. His will, executed 31 Dec 1913, bequeathed all property and money to daughters Ruth and Lida Dabney. Joseph Ferrell Dabney, Jr. died of chronic myocarditis at 89 years of age, according to his death certificate.
