Born the daughter of William Dickinson and Lucy Coleman, Rachel Burnett Dickinson married Joseph Ferrell Dabney Sr. on 24 May 1818. She bore eleven children and they lived at Dabney's Mill in Louisa County until at least 1840. After falling on hard times, they moved back to Rachel's home of Caroline County and lived at their farm known as "Maple Swamp". After Joseph died in 1845, she remained there until her death- cause listed as old age. Five of her sons fought for the Confederacy; two more made their contribution as civil servants.
