Mrs. Wood was a member of Elderton Presbyterian Church in
Elderton, where she was honored to be the first woman to
serve as an elder. She also belonged to the Armstrong County Historical Society, where she volunteered at the museum and served on the board for two terms. She was a member of the Indiana County chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Alpha Theta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma education society, and the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. Mrs. Wood graduated from
Rural Valley High School. In 1935 she obtained her bachelor's degree in education from Indiana State Teachers College (now Indiana University of Pennsylvania). She also completed graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh.
She began her teaching career in Armstrong School District at Elderton High School. After 10 years at Elderton, her career took her to Ford City High School. She taught 11th grade and Honors English there until her retirement in 1977. While she was at Ford City High School, she had the privilege of being the chairperson of the English department for many years.
