Jantjen Tammen was the first of nine children born to Willm Jacobs Tammen and his wife Hauke Wina Decker. She was born in Eversmeer, Ostfriesland, Germany. She and her family immigrated from Bremers Haven to New York in 1890. They then took a smaller ship to Galveston, Texas and then a train to Wichita County where they stayed for a time with Jantjen's grandparents who had immigrated earlier. She married Robert Hendrick August 12, 1899 in Wichita Falls. The marriage was annulled four months later. She married Franklin Torrey Jenne November 24, 1901 in Iowa Park, Texas. They had four children: Theodore Roosevelt; Carrie Valentine; William Taft; an infant that died at two days old.
