Kannapolis, NC- Howell Thomas Ballard, age 88, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, April 4, 2010 at the Bob & Carolyn Tucker Hospice House, Kannapolis, NC after several years of declining health.

He was born July 29, 1921 in Chesterfield County, SC, the son of the late Pearl E. Ballard and Elizabeth Ballard. He moved to Kannapolis, NC as a child.

He was retired from the former Cannon Mills Company after many years of service. He also was part owner of Kannapolis Taxi in the 1960's. He was a member of Charity Baptist Church. He was recognized as a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany with General Patton's 3rd Army. Among his interest he assisted in the football program with Coach Bruce Hardin and the Kannapolis Wonders for several years.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Evelyn Smith Ballard, who died on December 25, 2009.

The funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at Charity Baptist Church, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Dr. R.J. Hammond and Rev. Ron Bushey. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC with military rites by the Cabarrus County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at Whitley's Funeral Home.

Survivors include his sons, his daughter, his grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren of Kannapolis, NC.

The family would like to say a special thank you to the people at Varsity Bar-B-Que and Hospice & Palliative Care of Kannapolis for all their support and love shown during Howell's illness.
