This may be a cenotaph. Information about the burial of her actual remains is not clear. There was a stone memorial tablet that was first displayed at the east end of the old church near the pulpit in Penn Yan. In 1864, the stone tablet was removed due to renovations to the church and the tablet was sent to Canandaugua to the homestead of the Beals family. In 1901, the Beals homestead was sold and the tablet was placed in the Beals family lot in the old cemetery. But sometime before 1913, Elizabeth's son, John, saw the tablet in the old cemetery and requested to have it removed to the present Penn Yan church at his own expense; this was granted. [see 3 pages of text posted on her memorial].

Elizabeth and her husband, James, had 4 children:
Caroline and James III, are both found linked below to their mother. The burials of the other two are unknown. Anna was born 30 June 1845 in Penn Yan, New York and died 1930 in Bath, England and married Alonzo Cummings on 17 June 1880. John was born 16 Feb 1841 in Aurora, New York and died 11 August 1918 in England and married Laura Hortense Arnold on 31 December 1863 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Inscription

From the book "Village Life in America 1852-1872" by Caroline Cowles Richards [her daughter] @1913 comes the inscription she found on her mother's grave stone [stone tablet] on a visit to the cemetery between 1901 and 1913.

"Of gentle seeming was her form
And the soft beaming of her radiant eye
Was sunlight to the beauty of her face.
Peace, sacred peace, was written on her brow
And flowed in the low music of her voice
Which came unto the list'ner like the tones of soothing autumn winds.
Her hands were full of consolations which she scattered free to all-- the poor, the sick, the sorrowful."
