He enlisted in the Army on April 9, 1942 in Abilene, Texas. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Farm Hand and also as Married.

George was a Passenger on C-47-DL "Eager Beaver" (#41-7733), 40th Troop Carrier Squadron, 317th Troop Carrier Group, U.S. Army Air Force.

George died in the "Line Of Duty" when the "Eager Beaver", shortly after take off, crashed for an unknown reason into Cleveland Bay southeast of Townsville, Queensland, Australia during the war.

He was originally interred in Brisbane, Australia and was later repatriated here on July 9, 1948.

The son of James Henry Roberts and Emma Lou Stacia Swindle, was on board a C-47 that crashed into the bay at Townsville shortly after takeoff. He and nineteen other casualties were enroute to Sydney for a R & R after completing the modification of B-25's to low attack strafers. He was reburied at Fort Sam on July 9, 1948.
