In the early morning of July 27th the gentle spirit of Joseph Lawrence Duckworth returned to its Maker. He had been in ill health for several years, but his death came as a shock to his many relatives and friends.
"Uncle Joe," as he was affectionately called by many who knew him, was 71 years of age. He lived near Wanilla, Lawrence county, having moved there from Simpson county several years ago. He joined the Baptist church in early manhood and until his health failed him he was an active worker in his church and community. The influence of his helpful Christian life will live on even though he is gone.
He leaves the following to mourn his passing: a devoted wife, Frances Shoemaker Duckworth; three daughters, Mrs. Ray E. Wilson, of Wanilla; Mrs. Elmer E. Hopkins, of Mendenhall; Mrs. Mason Young, of Ellisville; three step-sons and three step-daughters: Rice Ainsworth, of Magee; Don Ainsworth, of Jackson; Wiley Ainsworth, of Mendenhall; Mrs. Nora Duckworth, of Mendenhall; Mrs. R. I. Tullos, of Magee; Mrs. Cassie Tullos, of Columbia; three brothers, R. E. and Jack Duckworth, of Magee; D. W. Duckworth, of Hernando; two sisters, Mrs. A. J. Herrington and Mrs. W. F. McIntosh, of Magee, and many other relatives and friends.
A son, Cortez Duckworth, preceded him in death ten years ago.
Funeral services were held from Goodwater church July 29th with Rev. B. H. Williams, pastor, assisted by Rev. Senseng, officiating. Interment was made in Goodwater cemetery with Mims Mitchell Funeral Home of Magee in charge.
Pall bearers were Charlie Grubbs, Bill Grubbs, Hardy Jones, William Jones, Alonzo Runnels and W. J. Johnson.
