Born to George Wright and Deborah Hasley Wright in Busby, Renfrew, Scotland. His father George died of Cholera on September 16, 1854 before Joseph's birth . The family lived in Busby for the next 12 years, working in the textile industry. Joseph Smith Wright, his mother, and four full siblings immigrated to America in 1868 and in the last year of the emigration of Mormon pioneers. The family settled in Franklin, Idaho where Joseph lived on land homesteaded with his mother. Joseph married Verena Foster in Franklin on 28 Jun 1880. They had ten children together. Their family moved from Franklin to Whitney, Idaho where most of the children were born. Later, they purchased a farm and moved to the Blackfoot, Idaho area. Late in life, they moved to Long Beach, California for health reasons. Joseph died in Long Beach and was buried in the Inglewood Park Cemetery. There is no grave marker for either Joseph or his wife Verena. Five of their children are also buried in the Inglewood Park Cemetery. Joseph Smith Wright and Verena Foster Wright are buried between the graves of Joseph Somo and Billy V. Waltman.
