Lulu Ashley was a graduate of Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Kentucky. She taught high school English for several years. She was very active in the Women's Society of Christian Service of the Methodist Church,
becoming the President for the state of Kentucky. Lulu and her husband, a Methodist minister, started a school for children during his ministry in the mining town of Wolfpit, Kentucky.
