Jeremiah Thomas Baker was born in Winfrith Newburgh, Dorset, born out of wedlock to Robert Vincent and Jane Baker. He married Ann Galton Gatrill on 10 Mar 1834 in Saint James Church, Poole, Dorset, England. Ann was christened 13 Jan 1814 in Saint James Church, Poole, Dorset, England, the daughter of James Gatrill and Ann Maber.

They had four children: Eliza Jane, Albert Henry, George Wesley, and Elijah Sims Baker. Ann died 26 May 1845, and Thomas then married Hannah Maber on 8 Oct 1845.

Jeremiah and Hannah had one child, Mary Ann Baker. Hannah died 1 April 1852 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. Jeremiah again remarried, this time to Adelaide Augusta Binning on 7 Mar 1853 in Portsea, Hampshire, England.

Adelaide bore him three children; David Ephraim and Manassah Delapole White Baker, who were born in England, and Frances Binning Baker, born in Iowa.

Jeremiah, Adelaide, George Wesley (son of Ann Galton Gatrill), Mary Ann (daughter of Hannah Maber), David Ephraim, and Manassah Delapole (Adelaide's children), all boarded the ship Thornton in Liverpool England on May 4th, 1856, as part of a company of 750 Mormons headed for Utah. The Thornton arrived in Castle Gardens, New York, June 14th, 1856. The company went by rail to Iowa City, Iowa, arriving on 26th of June. The ill fated James G. Willie Handcart company was organized, which included the Baker family. Adelaide left the company en route to Florence, Nebraska, somewhere in Iowa, on July 19th, 1856, returning the next day for her two children. Jeremiah left as well, taking his other children with him, but not at the same time as Adelaide. They all stayed in Iowa, where Frances Binning Baker was born in 1858.

Adelaide died of "stoppage of the bowels" in May 1860 in Adel, Dallas, Iowa.

Jeremiah moved his family to Ohio, marrying a fourth time, Mary Ann Harnden Butt, the widow of George Butt, in May 1861 in Oberlin, Ohio.
