A complete obituary can be found in the 3-8-1951 Bruning Banner:
John Herman Bruning, the son of Herman and Margaretha, nee Carstens, was born at Minonk, Illinois on July 9, 1872.
One month later, on August 9, he was baptized. At the age of 15, he renewed his baptismal covenant in Trinity Lutheran church at Bruning and was confirmed on April 8, 1888.
He was married to Carrie Franzen on August 30, 1900. This marriage was blessed with two sons and two daughters.
About a years ago, when he was very ill, he expressed a deep desire and prayed God that he might spare his life long enough so he would be able to be present at the dedication of the new church, and later in the year, together with his wife, be granted the rare privilege of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary. God was gracious and restored his health sufficiently so both desires were realized.
God removed him from all pain on March 1, 1951. He attained the age of 78 years, 4 months and 16 days.
He is survived by his wife, Carrie; four children, Mrs. C. C. Madsen of Omaha, Mrs. O. J. Martens of Lincoln, Dale Bruning of Bruning and Roy Bruning of Kansas City, Mo.; one brother, Fred Bruning of Botha, Alberta, Canada; grandchildren and other relatives and friends Four sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church, with interment in the church cemetery.
