The daughter of Chesley Martin and his wife, Rebecca White, Bettie was born in Virginia in 1840. Bettie was granddaughter of the famous Virginia surgeon, Dr. Rawley White.

On November 2, 1859, eighteen year old Bettie married Baptist minister Dr. William Sydnor Penick, D.D. in Chatham, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Shortly after their marriage, William S. would join Davy Logan's Guards, a volunteer regiment (53rd)from Virginia and he became Captain in 1861.

Post war, Rev. Dr. Penick would the Penicks through missionary work in Charlestown, West Virginia and Alexandria, Virginia. He was a successful minister who turned down presitgious positions in many East coast churches. In May 1885, he took on the challenge to become minister to a faltering Baptist church-First Baptist Church-in Shreveport, Louisiana.

It was their daughter, Genevieve, whose tragic death lead to Dr. Penick establishing the Genevieve Orphanage in Shreveport.
