James Miles Armagost was born in Centre county. Pa.. June 30th, 1828. Died in Harrison township, Jewell county, Kansas, Sept. 8th 1895, aged 67 years, 2 months and 9 days. When quite young he moved with his parents to Clarion county, Pa., and later to Clearfield county, where be continued to reside until 1866 when he moved to Washington county, Iowa. While living in Clearfield county. Pa.", he was married to Rebecca J. Emerick, a sister to the mother of one townsman Dr. Kirk. Of this union there were seven children born, six of whom survive. They are Geo. T., W. B., and John E. Armagost, Mary E. Allington, Lucretia E. Dodd and Hannah M. Matthews. His wife dying in 1867 he was married a second time in 1871 in Washington county, Iowa, to Mary E. Butterfield, who departed this llfe 1890. To this unlon were born children, five of whom survive him- -They are Ada F. Redenbo, and Oscar M.f Florence R., Maurice P., ., and Alia May Armagost. Mr. Armagost came to Jewell, county, in 1874 and was ever since been identified with the best interests of the county. In 1883-4 he represented his district in the state legislature. Mr. Armagost was an honorable, upright, citizen, and a man who had the respect and esteem of all who know him. His remains were followed to their resting place by nine of the eleven surviving children , and by a large concourse of loving and sympathizing friends and was interred at the Shafer cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Henry Dexter
