Waverly, IA - Dr. G. Rudolph "Rudy" Bjorgan, 79, died Saturday, July 4, 1998 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, IA.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8 at St. Paul's Lutheran in Waverly with Reverend Michael Burk officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
G. Rudolph Bjorgan was born on February 26, 1919 in Tulear, Madagascar, the son of Lutheran missionaries Reverend Ole and Laura (Hauger) Bjorgan. He was baptized in Madagascar in 1919 and confirmed in 1932 at Goodridge Lutheran Church in Goodridge. He graduated from Goodridge High School in 1936. He attended Concordia College in Moorhead, graduating in 1940 with a bachelor of arts degree.
He taught high school history and coached basketball for two years in Waldorf.
Rudy was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the Hawaiian Islands, Saipan and the Marianas Campaign.
He received his masters degree in history in 1948 from the University of Minnesota.
On October 10, 1948 he was united in marriage to Beryl A. Amundson at the rural South Blue Earth Church near Frost. They moved to Waverly, IA in 1950 where Rudy taught history and political science at Wartburg College. He continued his studies at the University of Minnesota and received his doctorate in 1967. He served on the Wartburg College Building Committee for many years. Rudy was a professor at Wartburg College for 34 years, retiring in 1984.
He was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and was president of the congregation. He was a member of the American Historical Society and a charter member of the Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs, serving as its president in 1957.
Active in community affairs, Rudy served on the Waverly Planning and Zoning Committee and as a committee member in the Wakota District of the Boy Scouts of America. He was active locally in the Republican Party and was also a member of American Legion Post #176, VFW Post #2208 and Amvets Post #79, all of Waverly. He was a member of the Solglimt Lodge of Sons of Norway of Cedar Falls.
Rudy is survived by his wife, Beryl, of Waverly, IA; two sons, Roger J. (Faye) Bjorgan of Eden Prairie and Stewart J. Bjorgan of St. Paul; one daughter, Barbara J. Anderson of Wes Des Moines, IA; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
