Simon Shunk served as a 2nd Class Private in the 8th Co., First Battalion of Cumberland Co. PA militia. Commanded by Col. James Johnson Aug. 1st, 1782. Reference PA Archives 5th Series, Vol. 6, page 125.

Adam was born to Christian and honorable parents, adhering to the Reformed Faith, in Pennsylvania, Brothersvalley Township, Somerset County, in the year of our Lord, 1797, the 23rd March and was baptised by the Rev. Heinrich Kiesze. The parents were:
Simon Schunck, and Susanna Schunck.

Last Will of (Johann ) Simon Shunk filed for Probate Husband of Susannah
Somerset Co. 5 Nov. 1828

In the name of God amen. I, Simon Shunk of Brothers Valley Township in the County of Somerset and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania being sick and weak but of sound mind, memory and understanding (praised be God for it) and Considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof, and to the end I may be the bettered prepared to leave this world whenever it shall please God to call me thence, do make and declare this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former wills by me at any time heretofore made, and first and principally I commit my soul into the hands of my creator who gave it; and my body to the earth to be buried in a Christian like manner. And as to such worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to entrust me I dispose of the same as followth: first I give and bequeath to my wife Susannah the house where I now live in the garden and the little meadow behind the house during her lifetime. She shall also have her bed & bedstead, kitchen dresser with what she may want out of said dresser, the Clock, the Bible, mare, sadde & bridle, 1 cow her choise, household and kitchen furniture as much as she needs, a stove and pipe and further she shall have out of my home place (willed to Peter) eight bushels wheat 6 bushels rye and ten bushels oats and feed her mare and cow when she is not able and keep her stable (the one now in my use) in order for her use as long as she lives further she is to have the thirds or the whole rent out of the place where Henry Weiner now lives and that place shall also be rented out so as to furnish her in firewood ready cut for the stove and kitchen delivered to her door. Peter shall also give her yearly one hundred pounds Pork and she is also to have from the home place apples and fruit as she shall need when there is any and she is also to have the third of what I may have in money at home standing out this shall be put into her own hands by my Executor as soon as can be done,
I give and bequeath the home place where I and Peter now reside to my son Peter at one thousand dollars out of' which he is to pay six hundred to wit sixty yearly until paid if he cannot pay up then my Executors shall sell the place to The best advantage my will is that each of my children shall have four hundred dollars as soon as can be after my death but each one shall take that in part of its four hundred what is set down in my account against it or notes or accounts that I may have against it but Susannah shall only be charged with Michael Choppennings book account and not with his notes those who get land take their four hundred out of the land the place where Loevel lives on I give to him at Seven Hundred dollars Two hundred down and fifty dollars yearly thereafter if can not pay up then my Executors are to sell it to the best advantage he shall commence to pay one year after my decease. The place or that part of my land where Henry Weimer now lives shall be sold by my executors to the best advantage as soon as may be after the death of myself and wife my son William is indebted to me two hundred dollars he shall pay fifty dollars yearly till he has paid up and after my and my wife's decease my Executors shall divide whatsoever remains to be divided so as
to make
my children all to have equal sums always keeping back or deducting
that which they have charged WITH MY SON {{SIMON}}

owes me $500.23 he shall pay ten dollars a year to my Executors until he is equal with his share with my other children after that if anything is to divide he is to receive his share or part so as to make his part equal to my other children's shares, and as some of my children's Sums received by them or what they are in debt to me are mentioned here in this my will and that of others not my Executors will take care that they are not charged twice with the same sum or for the same amount which my books and accounts will show them, they will see that Justice is done to each child of mine so as to make them their shares or parts all equal in the end. And lastly, my express will and meaning is, and I do hereby order and appoint that if any difference, dispute, question or controversy shall be moved, arise or happen concerning any gift, bequest or other matter or thing in this my will given and bequeathed, expressed or contained, that then no suit or suits in law or equity or otherwise shall be brought, Commenced or prosecuted1 for and concerning the same, but the same shall be referred wholly to the award, order and determination of my loving friends George Chorpenning, Elias Stahl, John Witt & John L. Snyder of Somerset and Jacob G. Miller & Solomon Bear of Berlin and they or a majority of them shall order, direct or determine therein shall be finding and conclusive to and on all and every person and persons therein concerned and any one of my children or heirs or any person or persons to whom any of my children's share shall be coming who shall bring or commence any suit or suits at law or equity or otherwise contrary to this my will shall be paid twenty dollars by my executors in full of his or her share or part if he or she shall then have more than that sum my executors or their legal representatives shall make them pay it back and divide it among those of my children who abide and stand by my will. And I nominate and appoint my friend Peter Hoffle of Berlin and my son William Shunk Executors of this my Will and testament

In Witness whereof I Simon Shunk the testator, have to this my will consisting of one sheet of paper set my hand and seal the twenty-fifth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand and Eight hundred and twenty Eight

Signed, sealed, published and declared the above testator as and for his last Will and testament in the presence of us who at his request, and in his presence have subscribed our names as witness thereunto
