Mary Jane Phillips was born June 9th, 1853 in Ashe, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Jesse Payton and Rebecca Miller Phillips. She married James Calvin Phillips in 1868. She and Calvin were from two different Phillips family lines. James Calvin's mother and father were Jonathan Wesley and Margaret Keyes Phillips. James Calvin was born in Rutherford, North Carolina on 22 of Feb. in 1849. In 1880 Mary and Calvin lived in Cooke, Texas, married and raising a family. In 1900 she lived in Duncan, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, Oklahoma. In 1910 at 57 yrs of age she was living in Wise County, Texas. Later she came to Lamesa, Dawson County, Texas and lived with her son and his family until she died April 11, 1939. She is buried in Lamesa Cemetery.
She and James Calvin Phillips had 9 children. They were: William H. Phillips 1871-1933
