Clara DeHaven Belden, 98, of Salina, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009. She was born Sept. 29, 1911, in Abilene, where she grew up and attended school. She worked as a secretary for the United Companies in Abilene for seven years, after which she accepted a position in Los Angeles as secretary for a prominent ear, nose and throat specialist whose patients included many of Hollywood's most famous stars. On Oct. 1, 1941, she married Elliott Belden, of Salina, at Wee Kirk o' the Heather Church in Glendale, Calif. He preceded her in death in 1980. Mrs. Belden was an underwriter for Franklin Life Insurance Company for 16 years, working with her husband in the Elliott Belden Agency before her retirement in 1982. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Salina, where she served on the board of trustees and played in the chancel bell choir. She also was a long-time member of Treble Clef Music Club and a member of Altrusa Club of Salina. She represented Saline County on the Children's Mercy Hospital Regional Council. She was preceded in death by her parents, Boyd and Anna Philomena (Gunzelman) DeHaven; 10 brothers; and one sister. Survivors include a daughter, Kay Diane Brooks, of Aqaba, Jordan; three sons, Bruce E. (Susan), of Knoxville, Tenn., Robert C. (Mary), of Delavan, Wis., and Brian D. (Chris), of Olathe; a stepson, Bill Belden (Carolyn), of Santa Barbara, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Barbara Miller (Bing), of Eskridge; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at First Presbyterian Church, 308 S. Eighth, Salina 67401. Private family burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.
