The son of Jacob & Catherine Elizabeth (Mohn or Moore) Shuey, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at Hummelstown, Dauphin County, July 1, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis, mustered into state service at Harrisburg July 2 as a private with Co. E, 36th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 11, 1863.
2. Enlisted in Harrisburg March 14, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 16 as a private with the 101st Pennsylvania Infantry with the second organization of Co. D, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865.

He married Catherine Ann "Kate" Lingle ca. 1865 and fathered Harry (b. 05/01/71, d. 02/21/72), Albert (b. 12/12/72, d. 01/18/81), Jennie (b. 08/23/74 - married Frank Deeter), Mary (b. 08/29/77 - married William George Snoke), Eden (b. 08/22/80), William (b. 09/24/82), Elsie (b. 08/02/84 - married Joseph Anderson), Charles (b. 08/02/87), and Kathryn (b. 10/07/89, d. 06/28/02). Cause of death is listed as "edema of lungs end result of cerebral congestion" with "senility" a contributing factor.
