Albert James Shuman

Albert James Shuman was the eldest son of John B. Shuman and Martha Ann Thompson Shuman. He was a brother to Charles W. Shuman, Mary Alice Shuman Loftus, Laura Ellen Shuman Peck, and Glendora "Glenna" Shuman Dearwester. Albert married Sarah Ann "Anna B." Wheeler on December 28, 1880 in Chesterville, Dearborn Co. IN. Their sons were Cortes S. Shuman and Ernest Wheeler Shuman and their adopted daughter was Rosa Shuman.

The Shuman farm was in Ripley County on the west side of the property line which ran with the Greenville Treaty Line. The farm land was located on both the north and south sides of US 50. A log cabin was originally there and Albert and Anna lived in it for a time before building the main house on the north side of US 50. A logish-cabin type building stood in that location 10-26-1975.

When Albert and Anna retired they moved south into Dillsboro and built another house on Bank Street near Western Row. They planted shrubs and had rose bushes. They used to grow gladiolus and dahlias in a bed on the left side of the house. They loved flowers and used to raise bulbs by the hundreds.

"Albert J. Shuman Death claimed another of our aged and highly respected citizens this week, Mr. Albert Shuman. Mr. Shuman spent his entire life in and around Dillsboro. He was born at Chesterville, Ind., a little more than seventy two years ago. He lived there until 1894 when he purchased a farm on State Highway No. 50 where he reared his family. About ten years ago he erected a lovely new home and it was there his death occurred Sunday morning. For more than fifty years Mr. Shuman has been a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge and recently he was honored with the presentation of a fifty year jewell (sic) by Chapman Lodge. He appreciated the honor conferred upon him and cherished the gift highly although he was not permitted to wear it, as practically a day later he was stricken with pneumonia. Anxiety was felt by his friends over his condition and word from his bedside was always received with hope that better reports would come in. It was a great shock to relatives and friends when his death was announced Sunday morning. Mr. Shuman's other lodge affiliations were the K. of P. and the Rebecca Lodge of Dillsboro. On December 28, 1930, Mr. and Mrs. Shuman celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. The affair was quietly observed due to the serious illness of Mrs. Shuman's brother. Throughout his lifetime Mr. Shuman radiated an influence for good and his memory will ever be cherished in the hearts of his loved ones in this community. Funeral service was held at the home on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by Chapman Lodge I.O.O.F. Rev. W. C. Watkins preached the funeral sermon and all that was mortal of a kind and loving father, a true friend and neighbor was tenderly borne to rest in Oakdale cemetery."

"Albert James Shuman was born on October 22, 1858 and departed this life at his home in Dillsboro Feb. 8, 1931, at the age of 72 years, 4 months, 17 days, after an illness of pneumonia. He was tenderly cared for during in illness by his devoted wife, Mr. and Mrs. Lovell Shuman. Mr. and Mrs. Shuman were married at Chesterville December 28, 1881 and contentedly journey along the pathway of life for the past fifty years. They resided at Chesterville then moved on a farm in Ripley Co., two miles west of town, and at the present time lived in Dillsboro. Shortly after his marriage he and his wife became members of Chesterville M.E. Church. After they moved to his farm in Ripley County they changed their membership to Greens Chapel M.E. Church. At Public Installation of the I.O.O.F. January 10 he was presented with a beautiful emblamatic pin rewarding him for his faithful and loyal membership for more than fifty years. He was also affiliated with the K. of P. Lodge Title Wave 77 at Chesterville. He was a member of the Rebecca Lodge. The writer has known him to be a quiet, unassuming, courteous gentleman. He was found at the bedside of a sick neighbor or friend to whom he was ever ready to minister. In a comforting way shortly before his passing to the Great Beyond he assured his faithful wife that all was well with him. He leaves to mourn his wife, Anna Shuman, one son, Ernest, who is residing on a farm near Dillsboro, Cortus, the oldest son, having preceded his father in death; one sister, Mrs. Mary Loftus of Chesterville; four grandchildren, Lovell, Delver, Floyd and Lillie Etta Shuman and one granddaughter by marriage, Mrs. Lovell Shuman, two daughters in law, Mrs. Ernest Shuman and Mrs. Mayme Mozingo; Mr. Will Wheeler, a brother in law, who has been in their home for fifteen years. 'Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar When I put out to sea. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell. When I embark. For tho' from out our bourn of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar.' "
