Jesse was one of the early settlers of Spartanburg, settling there in 1810. He was a sharp merchandiser who realized it was less expensive to get goods from Baltimore or Philadelphia himself than by trying to get the goods from Charleston, S.C. He would set out with wagons, slaves and dogs. Upon his return the dogs would precede him to the village of Spartanburg, thereby informing everyone that he had returned with new merchandise.

In 1825, he received a land grant of 578 acres, which he increased over the years; he owned much land in the area of the Village. A plaque in Cleveland Park, Spartanburg reads:

"Jesse Cleveland, Born 1785, died 1851
Came to Spartanburg 1810
Merchant for 41 Years just above the Cleveland Hotel.
This Park Dedicated to his Memory and is part
of a Grant of 578 Acres granted to him
6th Day of June, 1825"

The park was donated to the City of Spartanburg in 1923 by his grandson, John Bomar Cleveland.
