Frances received a commission in the USAF on January 4, 1963, and was stationed at Columbus Air Force Base in Columbus, MS. Two friends, Annette S. and Norma G., and I had arrived together at the base during the summer of 1962. Fran or Frannie, as she would become known to her friends, was assigned to room with Annette in the bachelor officer's quarters. It was during this time that I had the privilege of meeting her.

I remember Fran as having a sunny-type personality, being very kind and gentle in nature. Everyone liked her, friends and patients alike. While at Columbus she realized her dream of becoming a flight nurse.

Frannie was married for a short time early in her life. It ended in divorce after a few months, and she took back her maiden name. She never married again. However, she and an officer friend at Columbus, Paul, developed a strong attachment to each other. Circumstances prevented them from getting married.

She was stationed at Scott Air Force Base near Belleville, IL when she came to visit my husband and me in the summer of 1970. We lived quite a few miles north of Scott Air Force base in the Chicago area. I will never forget her pleasurable visit and how much our two young children "loved" her.

She resigned from the Air Force on January 31, 1983, having attained the rank of Major. We kept in touch until a few years before her death in 2003. It was truly an honor to have known her.
