Mabel Gifford Nicholls July 31, 1927 – October 10, 2004

Mabel Gifford Nicholls Fulton was born July 31, 1927, at Crystal Creek, Wyoming. She died Sunday, October 10, 2004, in Billings.

Born on Crystal Creek, which was fed by the snow waters of the Big Horns, Mabel began her voyage of life. Her parents were both immigrants to the area: Jess Gifford came by train from Nebraska to Sheridan and then by wagon over the top of the Big Horns into the Big Horn Basin. Grace Keele Gifford came from Utah. Mabel had four brothers, Arthur, Andy, Jess and Rex; and two sisters, Bertha and Lois.

The first 16 years of her life were along the Crystal Creek. Those were the years of the Great Depression. At 16 she went to California with a friend and eventually met her first husband, Johnny Spears. They were married on April 29, 1945, in Reno, Nev. From that union came two children, George and Steve. She later divorced Johnny while living in Lovell.

In August of 1959, in Cowley, she married Allan Nicholls and from that union came Allan Jr. Allan and Mabel spent most of their married life in Billings. Allan Nicholls died in a truck accident on June 17, 1973.

Mabel later married Robert Fulton but amicably separated after a year.

She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints shortly after her marriage to Allan Nicholls. On October 21, 1972, she was sealed to Allan in the Alberta Cardston LDS Temple. All those who knew her in the church would agree that the statement made by Christ "well done my good and faithful servant" applied to her.

She is survived by her brothers, Andy of Lovell and Rex (Althea) Gifford of Great Falls, Mont.; sister, Lois Schatz of Lovell; children, George (Susan) Spears, Steve (Jan) Spears, Allan (Bev) Nicholls all of Billings; grandchildren, George, Shane, Kelly, Cory, Dan, Chavis, Dustin, Mark, Jaime; great-grandchildren, Angelica, George, Charlie, Dillon, Tanaya, Braydhan, D'Mitri, Luram, Alden, soon to be born Isabelle Susan, Jemay, Talon; and great-great-grandchild, Antone.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allan Nicholls; her parents, Grace and Bob Schalk and Jess and Ruby Gifford; brothers, Arthur Gifford and Jess Gifford, Jr.; and one sister, Bertha Brems.

The last year and a half of her life was spent in the Aspen Meadows care facility. Even while she was there her thoughts were on others. Often she made the remark on how sick others were and was ashamed that maybe she complained too much.

If desired, memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice, 123 S. 27th., Billings, MT 59101. Flower memorials may be sent to Smith Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Billings. Viewing will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday evening at Smith Funeral Chapel in Billings, or from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning at the church. Interment will follow at 3:30 p.m. at the Lovell Cemetery.
