Gustava "Gus" Biars was born on 08 Mar 1850 in what is now Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1869, according to the 1910 federal census. (Source Citation: Year: 1910; Census Place: Clay, Gallia, Ohio; Roll: T624_1184; Page: 11B; Enumeration District: 28; Image: 641.) His obituary said he was born in Holland. Mr. Biars' death certificate says his parents were Christa and Christine Biars and that he was born in "Holland Germany."

Name variations for Gustava Biars: Gustavu Beiar, Gustav Bear, Gustif Biar, Gustas Biar, Byer and Byars. For Catherine Kraus: Kathern on a death record; Kate in her obituary; and Catharine on her tombstone. Her surname is seen as Kraus, Krauss, Krause and Croush.

* A baptismal certificate in German issued when Emma Catharina (Emma) Biars, daughter of Gustava and Catharine, was baptized into the Lutheran Church in Gallipolis, Ohio. Emma was born in 1878 and the document is dated 1879.

Gus Biars married Catharine "Kate" Kraus on 24 Aug 1871 in Gallia County, Ohio. The 1880 U.S. Census for Gustava and Kate's family says his parents, Christa and Christine, were born in Hanover. (Year: 1880; Census Place: Harrison, Gallia, Ohio; Roll: 1018; Family History Film: 1255018; Page: 396C; Enumeration District: 029; Image: 0434.) Gustava's Ohio death certificate says his parents were born in Germany.

Note: Mrs. Biars' name is spelled Kathern on a death record and Kate in her obituary. Mrs. Biars was born in 1848 in Baden, Germany, and immigrated to the United States in 1870, according to the 1920 federal census. Mr. and Mrs. Biars were farmers.

Mr. Biars died 17 Oct 1916 in his Clipper Mill home. Mrs. Biars died 22 Jun 1932 at home. Her obit in the Gallipolis Daily Tribune said, "As a peddler of produce, driving a team of old horses, she was a familiar figure on the streets of Gallipolis for many years."

According to information in the 1900 U.S. Census, Kate and Gus had eight children, five living. Known children of Kate and Gus: John Phillip A., Henry, Emma Catherine, Chris, Franklin, Augustus, and Fred.
