Walter was born August 22, 1900 in Barstow, California to Elvin Leroy and Fannie Agnes Mulcahy Mudgett. There is a picture of Walter in about 1910 with his mother and grandmother on Ancestry.com. He attended Daggett and Barstow schools, but quit high school at the end of his third year to help with the war effort in 1918.
He married Evelyn McCarthy and they had two children - Walter Leroy in 1927 and John Alfred in 1933. They later divorced.
Walter had a tire sales and repair shop in Barstow but was burned out in a disastrous fire. He then moved to Los Angeles where he established himself in the accounting department of the Wilshire Oil Company and was eventually promoted to a high level position.
Walter died in Los Angeles on February 3, 1963 at age 62.
