Herrera was a police officer in Farmington, New Mexico. He served just one year for the police force, dying in the line of duty at age 38. He was a World War II. Veteran. Officer Herrera and two other police officers were responding to a domestic disturbance call, where a drunken man was threatening to kill his wife and kids. The officers located the suspects vehicle at a nearby trailer park. As they began searching for the man, the man surprised them, holding them at bay with a rifle. The officers attacked the man when he briefly became distracted. During the scuffle, the man gained control of Officer Herrera's service revolver and shot him once in the chest. He shot at the others three times, before the third officer was able to subdue him. The suspect was sentenced to a total of ten years for the murder of Officer Herrera and the attempted murder of his partner. Officer Herrera was survived by his wife and six children.
