James Polhemus (also spelled Polhemous, Polhamus, etc.) was the son of John Polhemus (1746-1794) and his wife Hannah Van Brakle (1765-1846). His father John died some time before 1797, for that year his mother married as her second husband Stephen Paret of New York City. James and his two sisters, Agnes and Mary, were then brought up with the Paret family.

James married first, Catherine Hadley on 31 Dec 1816 in Manhattan; and second, Mary Smith on 11 Sept 1824 in Islip, Long Island. By his first wife, he had at least one child, daughter Catherine Ann, who married John Spies Pittman. By his second wife, James had children William Smith, James, Jr., John, Israel, Mary Amelia, Mary Adelia, Louisa Ann, Freelove Antoinette, and Isaac Polhemus.

James was a veteran of the War of 1812, in which he served as a Private in the 11th Artillery Regiment of New York. Later in life he was an auctioneer in New York City.
