By his first wife, he had at least one child, daughter Catherine Ann, who married John Spies Pittman. By his second wife, James had children William Smith, James, Jr., John, Israel, Mary Amelia, Mary Adelia, Louisa Ann, Freelove Antoinette, and Isaac Polhemus.
James was a veteran of the War of 1812, in which he served as a Private in the 11th Artillery Regiment of New York. Later in life he was an auctioneer in New York City.
