Son of Roger Haviland & Elizabeth Hare. Husband of 1) Hannah Wing (17 Nov 1764 - 2 Dec 1838) and 2) Mary Sherman (5 Jan 1791 - 19 Aug 1868).

Roger was the first of the name to settle around Glens Falls, New York. He brought his wife and four sons and occupied a house which became a local landmark - long known as the "Roger Haviland House" (it burned in 1858). He eventually moved to the Ridge where he died.

NOTES ON SANFORD'S RIDGE / GLENS FALLS:

In the early days, Sanford owned a part of what was known as Queensbury (see Abraham Wing's notes) that extended from what later was called Glens Falls, north. For some years it was larger than Glens Falls, but the water power at the falls provided too much competition for the then larger agricultural settlement and Glens Falls forged ahead in population.

The many Haviland families that were living in and around Glens Falls in the latter part of the 19th century were descendants of two Havilands who arrived in this locality about the same time - and who in turn were distantly related.

A) Roger Haviland, from whom we are descended, son of Roger Haviland, arrived in 1793 with his wife and four sons: David, Solomon, Joseph and Roger. They settled in Sanford Ridge, and subsequently owned a tremendous share of the desireable farming area.

B) Abraham Haviland (son of Thomas Haviland, who was the son of Benjamin Haviland and Charlotte Park). He arrived in Glens Falls about 1795; a blacksmith who settled in Glens Falls proper. He came with his wife and son: John Grant Haviland.

Upon leaving Glens Falls, the first big farm was that of Joseph Haviland, then John H. Staples (who was related through marriage to the Havilands), then Willis Haviland's farm, then Daniel Haviland's.

Excerpt from "History of the Town of Queensbury in the State of New York, with Biographical Sketches of Many of its Distinguished Men, and Some Account of the Aborigines of Northern New York" by A.W. Holden, M.D.: "Haviland's, Roger, house, 1795. An old fashioned story and a half farm house originally built by John Eddy, who afterwards removed to Ford Edward. It stood, facing South street, at the turn of the road leading to the big dam. It was burned about the year 1858. It was old Roger referred to in the above extract from the town records. He afterwards removed to the Ridge." (p. 179)
