He was a successful farmer, owning a large farm on the Ridge. He died as a result of a broken neck when he fell off a load of hay. Per grandson Senator Willis Henry Haviland: "Solomon Haviland had the large farm just below 'our' home on Main Street, East. He fell off a load of hay as he was standing up directing a team through a gate from the field. The load struck the side of the gate and he was thrown off the load. When he fell his neck was broken... He had two children, Roger Haviland ... and Hannah Wing Haviland, my mother."
