Winfield "Scott" was born on the 5th of October 1854 the son of Irbin Henry Brown 1822-1886 and Mary Elizabeth ORMSLEY/ORMSBY 1822-1879.

Winfield Scott Brown was born at Brownstown, Indiana according to son Roy Theodore Brown and daughter Edna BROWN Shockley who were personally interviewed by "Scott's" Great Granddaughter, Carole Anne Brown Whittemore in 1965.

Carole discovered at the Indiana State Library that Winfield Brown was married two times. Upon consulting Scott's son, Roy, he said - oh yea, I forgot all about that.

Winfield "Scott" Brown's first wife was Melvina Jones who he married January 18, 1885, probably at Brownstown, Indiana. They had one child, a daughter, named Florence who married a doctor and now lives in Chicago, Illinois. She had no children that Roy knew of. During this time Scott was a teacher at a country school. Scott and Melvina were divorced for reasons unknown. He then left Brownstown, Indiana and came to Indianapolis.

Her parents, John and Alice Mae Shane O'Donnell rented out rooms of their home. Scott's occupation at this time was a carpenter - contractor. While Scott lived at the O'Donnells' he started seeing Dollie. For a very long time he kept it to himself that he was married and pending a divorce. After the divorce was final,Dollie and Scott married in Indianapolis, Indiana on August 15, 1888. They had 13 children - of the 13, there was one miscarriage, probably between Goldie and Edna and a set of twin boys that were born prematurely.
